Two top things to avoid are (1) including links in the email, and (2) using HTML. Easiest thing to try first is just changing from HTML to plain text.

The rendering is fixed for me in release 1.4.2 - thanks! However, adding media in the editor still misses out the "!" at the start (which is trivial in comparison, of course).
