Learn2 maximum page width

I am using a theme inheritance to make a few minor css mod to Learn2 and would like to limit the page width as the site does not look good when you using a very wide page.
Played around with the CSS a number of ways (max-width) but can't seem to find a way that limits the maximum width.
Has anybody any idea how this could be done.
